I am an artist living and working in Vancouver, BC. I work with paper, acrylics, and archival ink to make abstractions that are kaleidoscopic, harmonious, and pensive. My style is hybridist, borrowing from op, minimalism, Russian constructivism, color field, and de Stijl, among others. Like the hard edged painters of the 1960s reacting to the Expressionists, I am concerned with regularity and symmetry. Geometrical and optical art is often concerned with issues of transcendental idealism, and I’m certainly working within this modernist tradition. But I’m also influenced by psychedelia, the high-color cut-outs and black-light posters of the hippie generation.

There is one moment, in the first few seconds, when you look at a piece of art and know that you love it. It’s the moment when, if you’re an artist yourself, you look at it and feel a rush of uplifting inspiration… and total soul-crushing jealousy all at the same time. It’s when you walk away thinking, “Damn, I wish I thought of that.”

Born in a remote tree planting camp on the west coast of Canada, Troy spent his first few years living in a tent guarded by two large dogs. He eventually strayed far from home to work as an award-winning photographer in Toronto and India, shooting for clients like Vogue and Rolling Stone, but he couldn’t shake his love for the outdoors and nature. Still in his 20s, with a solid career behind him, Troy packed his bags and moved back to the west coast, built himself a cabin deep in the woods with refurbished materials, and set to work on creating Mammoth & Co.
